Blended Learning : A mix of Experiential based, Social and Formal Learning (70:20:10)

If we debate that everything is based on some mechanism of Science. We need laws to prove it. Similarly when we talk about the innovative Learning model 70:20:10 learning and development reference model which captures the three types of learning - experiential, social and formal - and explains their relationship to one another is also anywhere based on science.


We all have studied science in our school days at least and what we found that Science has two frames one was Theory and other was practical. What could be the reason behind the bifurcation of the subject into two parts?


Now when we are using 70:20:10 principle in learning we can understand the concept behind of it. As in science, we need to do some practical sessions to understand the concept behind those chemical reactions, those laws of physics and more. 

In eLearning also we have found that most of the knowledge retention and learning happens in On the Job training, it means doing things by themselves (learners), based on learners own experience which we called as Experiential based learning, learners found it around 70 % learning comes in this way. Here a learning actually got accomplished through the repetitive completion of similar tasks and the overcoming of difficult challenges while at work. 


Whereas 20% of the Learning happens when we learn from our peers, through social learning, collaborative learning or through co-operative actions. The classic example behind this could be when we were in our school days and teaching concepts to our friends and learning from then while doing those combined study and all. Similarly when we talk about learning through peers in corporate is all about learning from their experiences, their success, their failure and more. Here we learn from our colleagues through Coaching, Mentoring, Social games, Team based Activities and more.

Now the remaining 10 % is coming from the self-study or formal learning, through that Instructor led training, Web-based training, Use of Mobile Learning and more. Here we actually focus on systematic training and provide those learning materials for self-study to get prepared for the class, session or activity.
